Trained in the US and moved to England, February—March , for duty with Ninth Air Force 50th Troop Carrier Wing, IX Troop Carrier Command.
Began operations by dropping paratroops of the st Airborne Division near Carentan on the Cotentin Peninsula on 6 June and by transporting gasoline, ammunition, food, and other supplies to the same area on 7 June, being awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for completing these missions during the invasion of Normandy.
Began flying supply and evacuation missions between England and France after the invasion of the Continent. In July most of the group was sent to Italy where it transported supplies to Rome until August The "detachment" in Italy participated in the invasion of southern France, dropping paratroops of the th Parachute Infantry Regiment near Le Muy on 15 August and towing gliders carrying reinforcements to that area later in the day.
Meanwhile, those remaining in England continued to haul cargo, and on 10 August dropped supplies to an infantry battalion encircled at Mortain in northern France.
The detachment returned to England on 25 August The air echelon moved to France on 11 September , but returned immediately to England to participate in the airborne invasion of the Netherlands.
Dropped paratroops of the 82d Airborne Division near Groesbeek on 17 September and released gliders with reinforcements on 18 and 23 September.
By the end of Sep, the entire group had completed the move to France. On 26 December , during the Battle of the Bulge, the group hauled gliders filled with supplies for the st Airborne Division encircled at Bastogne.
In March it towed gliders with troops of the 17th Airborne Division to the battle area near Wesel during the airborne assault across the Rhine. Between 21 April and 14 May , the group's air echelon operated from Conflans, France, to be closer to the front.
The group transported food, clothing, medical supplies, gasoline, ammunition, and other cargo to the front lines and evacuated casualties to rear-zone hospitals.

Airmen were often deployed throughout the world to support Air Mobility Command 's global reach mission.
During the wing's tenure of Pope Field, it worked alongside the 43rd Airlift Group. The th had one senior officer in charge of the wing and three group commanders operations, maintenance and mission support and 1 medical squadron commander who oversaw the 19 units that made up the th.
The units that made up the th were manned by about 1, reservists and civilians. About of the civilians employed by the th were "ARTs", or Air Reserve Technicians.
An ART's civilian job requires the man or woman to be a member of the Reserve. The majority of Reserve training was completed during unit training assemblies or "UTA" weekends.
Each reservist completed one weekend a month of training each year. Besides two days of training each month Reservists must schedule and complete a minimum of 15 days of training during a calendar year.
Reservists also opted for additional training to attend schools, maintain flying proficiency or to support special projects. The wing was first activated as the th Troop Carrier Wing at Wold-Chamberlain Field , Minnesota in June ,  when Continental Air Command ConAC reorganized its flying units under the wing base organization system, which united the flying units and supporting units under a single wing.
Its flying element, the th Troop Carrier Group had been at Wold-Chamberlain since the fall of The th was mobilized for the Korean war,  as were all reserve combat units.
Along with other Tenth Air Force units, it was activated in the second wave of reserve units being called up. Its personnel were distributed as fillers to other organizations, with Strategic Air Command getting first pick of these mobilizees.
The wing was redesignated th Fighter-Bomber Wing , and in June , reactivated at Fort Snelling , Minnesota, where it replaced the th Reserve Training Wing.
The reserve mobilization for the Korean war, however, had left the reserves without aircraft, and the unit did not receive aircraft until July.
As a fighter unit, the wing initially flew World War II era North American F Mustangs , but received jet powered Lockheed F Shooting Stars in In the mids, the Joint Chiefs of Staff were pressuring the Air Force to provide more wartime airlift.
At the same time, about Fairchild C Flying Boxcars became available from the active force. Consequently, in November the Air Force directed ConAC to convert three fighter bomber wings to the troop carrier mission by September In September , the wing became the th Troop Carrier Wing once again and began training with C Flying Boxcars.
The wing was not inactivated in this reorganization. As mentioned, the changes included inactivation of all remaining fighter bomber wings.
Since , the Air Force had been detaching Air Force Reserve squadrons from their parent wing locations to separate sites.
The concept offered several advantages: communities were more likely to accept the smaller squadrons than the large wings and the location of separate squadrons in smaller population centers would facilitate recruiting and manning.
As it finally evolved, ConAC's plan called for placing Air Force Reserve units at fifty-nine installations located throughout the United States.
At General Mitchell Field, the wing initially trained with the d Air Reserve Flying Center, but in , the center was inactivated and some of its personnel were absorbed by the wing.
In place of active duty support for reserve units, ConAC adopted the Air Reserve Technician Program , in which a cadre of the unit consisted of full-time personnel who were simultaneously civilian employees of the Air Force and held rank as members of the reserves.
Although the dispersal of flying units under the Detached Squadron Concept was not a problem when the entire wing was called to active service, mobilizing a single flying squadron and elements to support it proved difficult.
This weakness was demonstrated in the partial mobilization of reserve units during the Berlin Crisis of To resolve the mobilization problem, at the start of ConAC determined to reorganize its reserve wings by establishing groups with support elements for each of its troop carrier squadrons.
This reorganization would facilitate mobilization of elements of wings in various combinations when needed. However, as this plan was entering its implementation phase, another partial mobilization, which included the th Wing, occurred for the Cuban Missile Crisis , with the units being released on 28 November The formation of troop carrier groups was delayed until February for wings that had been mobilized.
Volunteer aircrews also supported military operations in the Dominican Republic in May Tragedy struck the wing on 5 June when a C Flight Number under the command of Maj.
